Artist Choong Sup Lim (b. 1941) is well-known for creating powerful works embodying millennia-old Korean tradition and philosophical metaphors. Blending light, video, sound and elements from Korea’s traditional weaving culture, Umbrella presents the viewer with a meditative environment capturing the harmonious intersection of contrasting concepts such as nature and civilization, visible and invisible, and source and reflection, revealing light’s timeless essence through an examination of duality and unity.
Born in Jincheon, Chungcheongbuk-do, Lim attended Seoul National University before continuing his studies in New York City, which he has called home for more than 30 years. Based in Tribeca, Manhattan, Lim has received international recognition and his works are held in numerous distinguished private and public collections, among them the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum, the National Museum of Australia, and the Leeum Samsung Museum of Art in Korea.
