On view from May 14 - June 1, 2013 at the Sylvia Wald and Po Kim Art Gallery, Reflections: Selected Portraits of Po Kim and Sylvia Wald traces the four-year relationship between photographer Jin Hong Kim, Po Kim and his late wife Sylvia Wald. The group of 19 large-scale black-and-white portraits reveals the chronology of their relationship and reflects the intimacy between the subjects. Many of the images were taken in the private quarters of their home and studio, giving the viewer a glimpse into their life. Jin Hong Kim has captured diverse aspects of human experience in photography through social and natural landscapes. In Korea, his career began in the 1970s when he photographed a famous circus on a small island called Jeju. He received his BFA from the College of Art School in Memphis, Tennessee and his Master of Fine Arts from Pratt University, New York. Among his various photographic series, a major achievement for Kim was an extensive documentation of the lives of African Americans in Memphis and Harlem, New York in their home and environments. This body of work is similar to his current work where the images reflect the relationship and connection of individuals to each other and their surroundings.
